Former Apex High baseball standout Michael Knox belted three home runs in the second game of his professional career last week.
Knox hit home runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings for the St. Louis Cardinals' Gulf Coast Rookie League affiliate in a 9-4 loss to the Florida Marlins' affiliate.
He set records with 47 career home runs in his two seasons at Mount Olive and with 24 home runs during the 2010 season. He played his final two years at Mount Olive after playing one season at North Carolina.
Knox decided to forgo his senior season at Mount Olive after being drafted by the Cardinals in the 41st round of the 2011 major league draft.
Collins signs: Recent Apex graduate Bethany Collins has accepted a scholarship to play basketball at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala.
Spring Hill's new coach is former Cary High basketball star Karen Curtis McConico, who has been an assistant at High Point University for seven years. McConico also is High Point's all-time leader in scoring and assists. She also is a former Cary High coach.
Amy Dodd, a former Apex standout who played at High Point, is one of McConico's assistants.
Bae wins junior title: Athens Drive junior Sarah Bae won the N.C. Junior Girls Golf Championship last week at the Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte.
Bae defeated Kayla Sciupider of Etowah 4 and 3 in the match-play final. Bae took an early lead by winning four of the first five holes and held a three-hole lead after 12 holes.
She won No. 14 with an eagle and closed out the match with par on No. 15.
