Once again, the Carolina RailHawks gave up the game’s first goal.

And once again, they retaliated with an offensive onslaught en route to another league victory.

Carolina trailed all of 11 minutes before going on to defeat the last-place Atlanta Silverbacks 5-1 Saturday night in Atlanta.

It was the ninth straight win for the RailHawks and fourth come-from-behind win of the season. Carolina (11-1-1) is unbeaten in their last 12 matches.

“We’re disappointed we lost the first goal. We were playing well at the time and could have defended better, but it came against the run of play,” coach Martin Rennie said in a statement. “We kept our composure and the team fought back as it has done all season. It keeps us on a roll, and now we’ll get focused on what we have to do get to 10.”

The RailHawks got three quick goals before halftime, the first coming from the North American Soccer League’s leader in goals, assists and points in the 21st minute. Etienne Barbara’s tally on a long pass from Matt Watson was his 14th this year.

Nick Zimmerman scored from 25 yards out in the 29th minute on an assist from Floyd Franks and Chris Nurse scored on an assist from Jonny Steele in the 36th minute as the RailHawks took a 3-1 lead into halftime.

Zimmerman doubled up with his second goal of the game in the 63rd minute, coming on an assist from Nurse. Defender Brad Rusin headed in his first goal of the season in the 88th minute on a corner kick from Allan Russell.

Atlanta’s Matt Horth scored off a counterattack in the 10th minute to give the Silverbacks (1-10-2) their only goal of the game.

The RailHawks peppered Atlanta with 20 shots on the night.

The team’s five goals were the most in club history for a road match, and it is the second-most goals they’ve ever scored in any contest.

“To score five on the road is a hard thing to do,” Rennie said.

The RailHawks return to WakeMed Soccer Park on Sunday to face their arch-rivals, the Montreal Impact. There may be fireworks on the field during that game, but the team has assured there will be fireworks after the game as part of July 4th weekend festivities.
