The Raleigh Amateur Radio Society will hold its annual "Amateur Radio Field Day" this weekend at 4501 Friendship Road in Apex.
Eight self-contained communications stations will operate from 2 p.m. Saturday until 2 p.m. Sunday. Set up will begin Friday starting at 2 p.m. and continue Saturday morning. Hams will practice the skills needed to handle emergency communications by setting up self-contained, two-way radio stations "in the field" to communicate for a 24-hour period while entirely off the grid with no commercial power or phone lines.
Hams use generators and batteries, solar and wind power; anything not from the local electric company. Each station will make brief contacts with hundreds of others across the region and across the country. The public is invited and will have an opportunity to get on the air and make a few radio contacts. For information, visit
