With Kristen Harris on the floor, Apex's volleyball team was hard to beat.
And with Harris rarely leaving the floor - because her all-around game enabled her to play at any spot - the Cougars didn't lose in their 27-0 season that culminated in the program's first state championship.
At 6-foot-2, the middle blocker was the most important player on the state's best team. She was named as the N.C. Gatorade Player of the Year.
"It was pretty much the perfect season," Harris said.
She posted a .587 kill percentage and was a three-time first team All-Conference selection and the 2010 league player of the year. Harris was also named the MVP of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A championship.
She excelled at the net, where she recorded 340 kills and 42 blocks, but she could play on the back line and be as effective as any libero, racking up 163 digs and 46 service aces.
By being able to play every position on the floor, Harris was able to help her team rally from a 2-0 deficit at Wakefield in the third round of the playoffs.
While the Wolverines' tallest players made errors in the back row, Harris continued to earn points until Apex came away with a 3-2 victory.
"When you're in the back row, it's mental. You just stay confident and believe in yourself," Harris said.
Harris has signed to play volleyball on scholarship at Elon next year.
"She exemplifies such qualities as dedication, determination, drive and ambition that allow her to perform at such a high level," Apex coach Nikki O'Connell said in a statement. "Her ability to motivate her teammates to become better players is extraordinary."
