Eleven area athletes were honored Sunday as News & Observer athletes of the year.
Green Hope had the most in the area with three honored as players of the year : senior Melissa Kandinata (girls tennis), junior Kristen Gaffney (girls basketball) and junior John Sparks (wrestling).
Apex's Kristen Harris, a senior, was volleyball player of the year while classmate Cawley Bromley was named girls lacrosse player of the year. Athens Drive senior Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler won boys soccer player of the year while sophomore Sarah Bae won girls golf player of the year.
Holly Springs pitchers Carlos Rodon, a senior, and junior Erica Nunn claimed respective baseball and softball player of the year awards.
Panther Creek's Henriette Stenkvist won girls swimmer of the year. Senior swimmer Victoria Mitchell of Cary was named girls scholar athlete of the year for all sports.
Falcons win Conference Cup: After five straight seasons of finishing second to Apex in the final Wachovia Conference Cup standings, Green Hope broke through to capture this year's title.
The Falcons won at least a share of eight conference titles to finish with 158.5 points. Points were determined by conference finish in each sport.
