RALEIGH -
In the 4-A singles state championship at Millbrook Exchange Park, Athens Drive star Roman Cacha settled for silver, falling to 2009 champion Robbie Mudge of Winston-Salem Reynolds 6-1, 6-3. Mudge, who is ranked No. 25 nationally for 18-year-olds, had a broken foot and was unable to compete in the event last season.Mudge (26-1) will play at N.C. State next season, while Cacha (27-2) is headed to West Point to play for Army.
"I think this one's sweeter because I didn't get to play last year," Mudge said. "I try to dictate the point from the baseline and it was just working today. I like how Roman plays, and I kind of fed off that."
Cacha said he got off to a slow start, a big mistake against Mudge.
"I played all right," said Cacha, who wants to go into mechanical engineering.
"I had a tough time getting into the first set. Robbie's an amazing player. I played him two years ago in the semifinals and it was a good match. Congrats to him. He played really well. He didn't give me any easy balls and had me on the run a lot."
Jaguar coach Gene Thomas said he was proud of Cacha's run.
"It was a great match," Thomas said.
"It took Roman a little bit to get into the first set. In the second set, he was up 3-2 and Robbie stepped up a little notch and took a break and that was the end."
The Carmean brothers, Quinn and Sean, a doubles team from Millbrook defeated Paul Yamane and Jack Riazzi of Reynolds for the 4-A state doubles title.
Gibbons wins doubles title: Cardinal Gibbons tennis players Chris Geaslen and Killian Steer left no doubt about who the best 3-A doubles team was at the Burlington Tennis Center on Saturday.
After easily winning their semifinal match, Geaslen and Steer put on a dominating performance against Asheville's Morris Porter and Tito Poplowski in the final, winning 6-4, 6-1 to capture the Crusaders first-ever tennis championship at the 3-A level.
It was also especially sweet for Gibbons, because it was the Asheville pair who had prevented the Crusaders from winning the 3-A dual team championship last year, when Porter and Poplowski edged Geaslen and Matt Daly in doubles competition to win the dual title 5-4.
Gibbons has now won five of the last six doubles state titles it has competed in, including four it earned when it was in the 2-A class.
"We actually started a little flat, but then (midway through the first set) we started to play with more energy when we really needed it," said Geaslen, a senior who had also won a 3-A doubles championship playing with Jonathan Fedorkowicz in 2009. "You got to love the payback."
Although Steer, a junior, had not personally lost to Porter and Poplowski, he played with the same intensity as Geaslen, as both powered shots past the Asheville duo, especially during the second set.
Gibbons coach Andrew Tuttle was impressed because Geaslen and Steer seldom play doubles together during the season, yet clicked so well in this championship run.
They also defeated the Southern Nash team of Owen Fike and Adam Glover 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.
Geaslen usually pairs with Daly in most dual matches, but this weekend Daly was involved in singles competition, where he reached the semifinals before falling to Charlotte Catholic's Kyle Johnson 5-7, 2-6. Johnson went on to capture his third consecutive individual singles championship.
Daly had beaten Turner Votipka 6-0, 6-0 in quarterfinal action.
"They all played really well," Tuttle said.
"Chris and Killian gained a lot of confidence from this entire weekend and hopefully it will carry over to this week. All of the guys are playing their best at the end of the season, which is what you hope to see."
