CARY - Carolina RailHawks forward Pablo Campos stands 6 feet 3, making him the ideal target for headers.

His teammates know this, and they found him twice Wednesday night in a 4-2 victory against the visiting Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

The RailHawks (3-1-1) are in first place in the North American Soccer League. The team is riding a five-game unbeaten streak after a season-opening loss to Puerto Rico.

Carolina trailed early. In the eighth minute, the Strikers' Patrick Otte needed just one touch to rip in a goal from outside the 18-foot box.

But the RailHawks rattled off the next three goals, and they started by finding Campos rising above the crowd.

In the 17th minute, RailHawks forward Etienne Barbara played in a cross from just inside the inline that found Campos near the far post. Campos' header nicked the bottom of the crossbar and fell for a goal.

"I think he didn't think the ball was going to be that high," Campos said of the defender marking him. "He went second to the second post thinking he was going to cut me, but the ball was a little behind."

The assist added to Barbara's NASL-leading points total.

"We talk a lot in practice," Campos said. "So he knows where I like the ball and where I'm going to be."

Barbara, who scored eight goals last season, scored his seventh goal in six games in the 27th minute off a penalty kick. Three of this year's goals have come off penalty kicks.

With back lines sure to give Barbara most of their attention after his torrid start, coach Martin Rennie said Campos can keep teams honest when trying to mark the main scorers.

Rennie felt so confident with Campos that he inserted him into the lineup even after Campos did not play in the team's most recent victory, a May 7 road win against FC Tampa Bay.

"It was a reasonably big decision to put Pablo straight in after winning the last game 3-1 and him missing, but I do think he's a real big threat," Rennie said. "He takes some of the pressure off Etienne when he's up there and they're working."

In 60th minute Wednesday, Campos scored again on a header, this timeon an assist from a Floyd Franks corner kick.

Fort Lauderdale's David Santamaria scored a stoppage-time goal, which was quickly countered in stoppage time by RailHawks reserve Allan Russell. He finished a counterattack opportunity off Franks' second assist of the game.
