WILMINGTON - Green Hope's Taylor Morrison scored with 30 seconds left to give the Falcons girls lacrosse team a 14-13 victory at Wilmington's Hoggard High.
The Green Hope girls (15-3), which had lost to Hoggard (14-2) last year by a goal in the same round on the same field, led 7-5 at halftime, and held a 13-9 lead with just six minutes to go.
But the Vikings, ranked second in the state, rallied by scoring four straight to tie it with 1:04 left in the game. Green Hope's star sophomore Maggie Auslander - already committed to play at North Carolina - missed the final three minutes with leg cramps, and it showed as her team lost faceoff after faceoff.
But the Falcons won a faceoff after Hoggard's final score, and it led to a set-up from senior Rachel Chapla to Morrison.
"I just cut through and the pass was there and I took a shot. We had just a couple of seconds left so all I wanted to do was for it to get in," Morrison said. "I almost didn't believe it for a couple of seconds."
A fiery Falcons defense fended off a final Hoggard attack as time expired to hold on for the win.
"We're a young team but they fought to the bitter end of this game," Green Hope coach Ashley Ruppert said.
Auslander led with four goals and one assist. Chapla, a senior, had three goals and two assists, complementing Kate Murphy's two goals and one assist and Campbell Stanley's three goals and two assists.
Morrison had two goals and one assist, while Angela Corley recorded an assist.
Green Hope will play at Cardinal Gibbons in Friday's third round. The Falcons won the regular-season meeting by one goal.
