APEX - All was well for Apex lacrosse Tuesday night.

Both the boys and girls teams advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA playoffs in dominant fashion.

The girls started the evening off with a 21-8 rout of visiting Chapel Hill, and the boys capped the successful night with a 16-2 dismantling of Durham Jordan.

In the girls game, Katie Wagoner's five first-half goals helped the Cougars jump out to a 13-5 halftime lead. Six others combined to score the remaining eight Cougars' goals in the first half. Kristi Marks found the back of the net three times, while Katie McLaughlin, Beth Fellows, Katie Burnet, Cawley Bromley and Sarah Giocanda each scored one.

After having a bye in the first round, Apex coach Jenn Flaherty was a little concerned her team might be rusty, so she was pleased with the quick start.

"We really executed well offensively," she said. "We'd been off for two weeks, so it was nice to get back out there."

It was more of the same in the second half.

Giocanda and Fellows each scored their second and third goals of the game, and McLaughlin and Burnet both found the net for the second time. Erin Cornell scored her lone goal late in the period, and Wagoner finished off her extraordinary evening with her sixth goal.

Jenna Hornik led the Tigers with three goals. Hayley Wilson and Kelsey Buckley added two apiece.

On the boys side, it was the second half that told the story.

Up 7-2 early in the third quarter, Apex scored four times in a less than two minutes to pull away.

"They're a good team," Jordan coach Joey Sliwa said. "We knew they had great team speed. We played pretty well defensively, but we did not execute offensively at all. For some reason we deviated from our game plan and could never get back to it."

The Cougars added five goals in the fourth quarter to put the finishing touches on the blowout.

Derek Sweet and Taylor Barrs finished with three goals each to lead Apex.

Michael Pittelli and Jonathan Avedesian each scored twice, while Curtis Holmes, Ryan Sullivan, Tyler Kazazian, Brian Cook, Clint Miller and Hayden had one goal apiece.
