One of the state's all-time leading passers will walk-on the N.C. State football team this fall.
Middle Creek's Garrett Leatham, who ended his career with the fifth-most career passing yards in N.C. High School Athletic Association history, said he was offered a preferred walk-on spot on the team and is already enrolled for the first summer semester.
Leatham threw for 9,488 yards in his three seasons on varsity.
This season for the Mustangs, he threw for 3,385 yards and 24 touchdowns while being named second-team all-conference for the second time in his career. He was a first-team all-conference performer his junior year when he threw for 3,855 yards (15th most in NCHSAA history for a single season) and led his team to an outright conference championship
In each of his three seasons as starter, Middle Creek won at least one playoff game, heading to the third round in 2010. The Mustangs set a school record for wins that year, going 12-2. Leatham's career win-loss record is 27-13.
"It's been a great three years at Middle Creek and I'm excited to get the opportunity to play the sport I love for a couple more years," Leatham said in a text message.
Leatham's career highs are among the state's top all-time numbers as well, ranking in the top 15 in single-game passing yards (451), single-game passing completions (33) and single-game passing attempts (55).
Weight classes change in wrestling: The National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations approved a measure that will change the parameters of the 14 weight classes used in high school wrestling.
The new measure starts the lowest weight class at 106 pounds, where previously the bar was set at 103. The rest of the classes continue like this: 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220 and 285.
Most weight classes fluctuated just a few pounds, while others (145, 152, 160 and 285) stayed the same.
The major change to the lineup was the creation of a 182-pound class, where previously there was only a 171 and a 189. The 189 class became the 195 and the 215 class became the 220. The 171 class became 170.
That will lead to high schools needing heavier wrestlers to fill out their lineup.
The weight class removed from the lower weights to make room for 182 was the 140-pound class.
The previous weight classes were: 103, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 215, 285.
Girls basketball coaching turnover: A week after Apex addressed its girls basketball coaching vacancy, Holly Springs posted is opening, too.
After one year on the job, coach Tierre Ramsey resigned to focus on a future in administration. The Golden Hawks went to the second round of this year's state playoffs after finishing runner-up in the Tri-Nine regular-season and tournament.
The move also means that out of the league's eight Wake County coaches, only three - Middle Creek's Wes Petty, Cary's Donald Kent and Panther Creek's Geoff Bowman - have been at their posts for four seasons.
Petty has been at Middle Creek for seven seasons, while Kent and Bowman just completed their fourth.
