RALEIGH - This year’s Tri-Nine 4-A Conference track and field championships were held at the same venue, had the same two team champions and honored four repeat MVPs.

In all, not much had changed since 2010, except that a few conference records fell.

Cary repeated its boys championship with 183 points on five individual championships, including two by running MVP Bakri Abushouk in the 800- and 1,600-meter races.

Second-place Fuquay-Varina had 122 points.

Apex defended its title in the girls championship with 176.75 points, edging runner-up Green Hope, which had 158.75.

Apex got half of its individual titles from junior Alexis Murphy, who won the 100 and 200, the long jump and the triple jump.

Murphy’s field MVP performance was a repeat of last year, as were all four championships.

“They decided to spread me out in individual races because we needed points for the team,” Murphy said. “Whatever Coach asks me to do, I’m doing it.”

Fuquay-Varina’s Shawn Underwood, who was the league’s field MVP last year, tied a 21-year old conference record in the discus with a throw of 158 feet, 4 inches and won his second conference title in the shot put with a throw of 55-1.

Josh McClam of Holly Springs won titles in the long jump (22-2.25) and triple jump (43-8) to bring him co-MVP honors in the boys field events with Underwood.

Cary’s Deanna Foshee repeated as Tri-Nine running MVP, winning the 800.

Green Hope boys pole vaulter John Mangum broke a 9-year-old conference record, clearing 14-6.

Green Hope’s Olivia Enright shattered the league record in the 3,200 by more than 14 seconds.

Were it not for Murphy’s jumps, Apex may have still had a field MVP, with sophomore Brianna Heilsnis winning the shot put (31-6) and discus (110-0).

“I was quite surprised in shot,” Heilsnis said. “I don’t throw 31, I throw 30 – but that was awesome.”

Janet Watson of Panther Creek won the girls high jump, and Apex’s Audrey Diener won the pole vault.

Green Hope’s Rayna Yvars took the 100 hurdles, and Falcons teammate Monica Green won the 400.

Other girls winners included Apex’s Lexi Robinson in the 300 hurdles and Cary’s Jenna Christensen in the 1,600.

Athens Drive’s Lamar Nobles won the high jump, and fellow Jaguar Kevin Vincent won the 110 hurdles.

Cary’s Darrell Sheppard won the 100 and 200, and Imps teammate Kway Taylor-Greene won the 400 with 49.86.

Fuquay-Varina’s Jake Repar won the 300 hurdles.

Panther Creek’s Jacob Sears won the 3,200.
