CARY - Athens Drive rolled out the bats in the championship game and held off a battling East Wake team to take the Bobby Murray High School Invitational Baseball Tournament title 19-10 over the Warriors.
This was the third straight year East Wake reached the championship game, and coach Kerry Kincaid's team has taken home the runner-up trophy each time.
The championship game was a stark contrast to the Jaguars' first two wins in the tournament, a 1-0 victory against Heritage in the opener and a 2-1 win against Millbrook in the second round.
Also Saturday night, Fuquay-Varina went 3-0 in the tournament with a 5-4 win against Jamestown Ragsdale; Person went 3-0 with an 8-4 win against Broughton; Southwest Guilford topped Wakefield 11-4; Wake Forest-Rolesville won 3-0 against Heritage; and Millbrook stopped St. David's 10-6.
Friday's play was postponed because of rain, so the 12 teams played the second round Saturday. East Wake shut out St. David's 13-0, Athens topped Millbrook 2-1, Ragsdale won 17-5 against Broughton, Fuquay-Varina beat Heritage 7-3, Person County took a 6-4 win against defending champion Wakefield and Southwest Guilford edged Wake Forest-Rolesville 1-0 in eight innings.
In the Athens Drive game, the team scored eight runs in the top of the first on six hits, two walks, one hit batsman and one East Wake error. Patrick Mason doubled and singled in the inning. Ben Snotherly singled and Eric Berger had a two-run single. Justin Reynolds and Matt Proctor singled during the Jaguars' rally.
The Jags continued to score but needed the cushion because the Warriors lineup also came to life.
By the end of the game, coach Joey Bell's team had 20 hits, including six by catcher Patrick Mason, who had three doubles and a triple.
First baseman Justin Reynolds, the tournament MVP, had four hits, and center fielder Snotherly had three.
East Wake trailed 17-6 entering the bottom of the fifth but scored five runs to keep the game going. But in the end, the eight-run first inning was just too much for the Warriors to overcome.
Fuquay-Varina finishes unbeaten: The other Tri-Nine Conference participant in this year's Bobby Murray field was Fuquay-Varina. And just like Athens - the team the Bengals are chasing for second place in the league standings - Fuquay finished with a 3-0 record.
Fuquay shut out Millbrook 2-0 and then topped Heritage 7-3 in the tournament's first two games. The Bobby Murray tournament seeds the 12-team field by runs allowed for the final game, which meant Fuquay had to play Jamestown's Ragsdale High School.
Fuquay downed Ragsdale 5-4 Saturday night.
