APEX -
Town to allow alcohol at eventsFuquay-Varina commissioners voted Tuesday to permit alcohol at public events, a move that will allow beer and wine sales at Celebrate Fuquay-Varina in June.
Commissioner Bill Harris was the lone dissenter in the 3-1 vote, which came after a thorough discussion.
The new ordinance will allow bars and restaurants with ABC permits to serve alcohol within the confines of an event, if the town approves the request.
Celebrate Fuquay-Varina is a two-day event that includes a concert June 3 on Broad Street near the Aviator Brewing Co. Tap House and the adjacent Smokehouse restaurant, which is also run by the brewery's owner.
The town of Morrisville recently amended its rules to permit alcohol at public events in time for the Taste of Morrisville on May 14. But the new rules required a nonprofit to sell the beer and wine and a group didn't come forward in time.
Town gets spokeswoman From Staff Reports Stacie Galloway began work this month as the town of Apex's first public information officer.
Galloway, who lives in Apex, previously held the same position in the town of Morrisville.
The main responsibility for Galloway is to serve as the mouthpiece for the town, coordinating communication of the town's programs and initiatives to residents, businesses and media. The position was made available with funds redirected from the economic development budget and a vacant webmaster position.
Morrisville has yet to name a replacement for Galloway.
