Triton's boys lacrosse team is going to be an easy win for Tri-Nine opponents the rest of this season.

And I'm not knocking the school, which is located in Erwin and plays in Conference 2 with the seven Tri-Nine Conference schools who also field boys lacrosse teams.

But the Hawks are forfeiting from here on out.

Triton has discontinued its varsity boys lacrosse program for the remainder of the season.

The Hawks started the season with no junior varsity team. Now they'll only play JV games.

Lacrosse is still a relatively new sport at the school and the Hawks were fielding a team filled with players with little or no playing experience.

After going 3-7 last year, Triton's varsity will end the 2011 season 0-14.

Povse breaks school record: UNC-Greensboro recruit Max Povse broke a Green Hope baseball record April 4.

Povse struck out 18 batters, walked no one and allowed just one hit in eight innings of work last night against Middle Creek (3-10, 3-8). Povse got a no-decision, but Green Hope (8-6, 7-4) won on a walk-off in the bottom of the 11th inning to win 2-1 on a Nick Addona two-out infield single with the bases loaded.

The 6-foot-8 right-hander leads the Triangle in strikeouts, amassing 58 on the year.

If you think 18 is a lot of strikeouts for one game, you'd be right. But if you're like me and thought it might be close to a NCHSAA record - you'd be wrong.

The most in one game will likely never be touched: E.V. Spell of now-defunct Clement High School fanned 33 in a 1968 game.

Great shot: Wake Christian freshman golfer Lucas McCallen did not have a great round in a recent match with Cary Academy, but he made one great shot, acing No. 8 at Eagle Ridge Golf Club. McCallen, who usually shoots in the low 40s, posted a 46.

Williams pulls off the double: Athens Drive's Chris Williams pulled off an impressive feat Friday night.

He was the winning pitcher in two games in one night.

Athens was playing a double-header at Tri-Nine Conference opponent Middle Creek, starting the first game where a previous game had left off due to darkness - in the top of the ninth.

Williams, a senior and N.C. State recruit, pitched one scoreless top of the ninth. Middle Creek walked in the winning run in the bottom half, giving Williams the win in a 3-2 contest.

In the next match-up, Williams again took to the mound in a 8-1 Jaguars win that was called in the middle of the sixth inning due to lightning (but under NCHSAA is counted as a final that does not need to be made up at a later date).

WCA coaching changes: Randy Johnson, who coached Wake Christian Academy varsity football for 15 years before resigning after the 2006 season, is resuming head coaching duties in the fall.

Johnson, a 1987 graduate of Wake Christian, was the school's football coach from 1992 through 2006. His teams won N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state titles in 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000.

Johnson, who is the school's athletic director, succeeds David Williams, who had replaced Johnson in 2007.

"We had just swapped positions for a while," Johnson said. "I had planned on coming back."

Williams is expected to remain on the staff.

Wake Christian also is making a change in boys basketball. Chris Underwood is replacing Will White as the varsity boys coach. White is expected to coach the junior varsity team.

A 2007 graduate of Wake Christian, White played soccer, basketball and golf at the school and was an N.C. Christian School Athletic Association all-state selection in basketball. He graduated cum laude from N.C. State in 2010.

Athens Drive football: Four more Athens Drive football players have made commitments recently. Linebacker Cameron Boone and defensive lineman Myles Quimby are headed to the Globe Institute of Technology in New York City.

Running back Kyree Green and defensive end Zach Bender have signed with Fayetteville State.

Sutton invited: Panther Creek sophomore football player Mike Sutton received an invite to tryout for the Under-19 USA Football Team. The trial is in Atlanta from May 28-30.

Bulldogs win CA baseball tourney: Wake Christian won the Charger baseball tournament, hosted by Cary Academy, on April 2.

The Bulldogs defeated the Chargers 6-4 in the championship game, breaking a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning.

Wake Christian's Joseph Curry (7-of-10 hitting, six RBIs) and catcher Dillon Brown (5-for-8 hitting, eight RBI) were named to the all-tournament team.
