APEX - Apex coach Jen Flaherty adapted the Princeton offense from basketball to the lacrosse game and her high school girls team worked it to perfection.

Apex worked quickly and efficiently against visiting Green Hope for a 20-10 win Wednesday in Conference 2 play.

Apex players slid off defenders on backdoor cuts to the goal, received passes and scored proficiently. Few shots did not result in goals.

“We worked really hard on our shots [in practice]. Before, they were just catching and shooting. Tonight, their shots were nice,” Flaherty said.

Apex (13-0, 8-0) jumped ahead 5-0 in the first five minutes. Then the Cougars ripped off a 6-1 run before they reached the halfway mark of the first half. When the dust settled, Apex led 11-2 with 12:41 to play in the first half.

“We worked hard on a lot of things like transition and shot selection, and they executed great today,” Flaherty said.

Katie Burnet had five first-half goals to help give Apex a 15-4 halftime lead. The junior midfielder finished with six goals and two assists, giving her 42 goals and 98 points so far this season.

Green Hope (9-3, 5-2) tried to control the tempo in the second half.

“I think we came out a little bit shell-shocked and not ready to compete at our top level,” Green Hope coach Ashley Ruppert said.

The Falcons closed the gap to 17-7 with 14:30 remaining, but the Apex machine cranked up again rattling off three straight goals.

Green Hope closed out the scoring with three goals in the final five minutes. Rachel Chapla led the Falcons with four goals and an assist.

Katie Wagner had four goals and three assists and Cawley Bromley added three goals and three assists for the Cougars. In total, eight different players scored for Apex.
