CARY - Cary junior Ellie Wu’s got talent.

After her double-dip Wednesday evening, that much can’t be denied.

Wu missed the first half of the Lady Imps’ Tri-Nine Conference battle with Holly Springs to compete in the “Cary’s Got Talent” school talent show. In overtime, she scored the game’s only goal in the second overtime period give Cary a 1-0 victory.

A normal starter for Cary (4-6-2, 3-6-1), Wu came bounding down the track dressed in uniform with her bookbag on her back midway during the second half. Cary coach Laura Kerrigan had Wu warm up, then sent her in the game in time to finish regulation.

“She had talked to me about the talent show and she’s an incredibly talented singer. You can’t tell someone, ‘No you can’t go sing in the talent show because we need you in the game.’ It’s something she loves to do,” Kerrigan said. “The minute she finished over there, she ran over here, warmed up and came in the last 10 minutes and wow what a spark.”

Cary had turned up the pressure on Holly Springs (5-5-1, 4-5-1) and its junior goalkeeper Lauren Gartland in the second half. The Golden Hawks, meanwhile, had a shot deflect off the post in that same period.

“The whole second half I thought we moved well off the ball, we showed for each other, we passed better, we controlled the ball better, we had people flying into the box trying to get crosses and it just wasn’t working out for us,” Kerrigan said.

The teams went another 10 minutes without scoring in the first overtime period. Then in the 96th minute, a corner kick by Nikki Hoff was met by senior CeCe Risk. Risk’s header popped up in front of the goal, where Wu volleyed it in.

“It was weird coming to the game from the talent show because it was a completely different mindset,” Wu said. “I was just at the right place at the right time.”

The Hawks were unable to score on Cary goalkeeper Annie McHenry in the final four minutes, and the Imps held on for their fifth shutout on the year. It was also Cary’s third win in five games, which now has the Imps hopeful they can break into Tri-Nine’s top five and earn a playoff spot.

“Ever since my freshman year, we start out a little shaky but we get to know each other and each other’s ways and that really helps us out by the end, we’re really clicking together,” McHenry said.

Just minutes after giving her team a victory, Wu walked back into Cary High to see how her group fared in the talent show.

Unfortunately, their mash-up of Rhianna’s “Umbrella” did not place.

But Wu will remember the night as one where she got to put her talents on display in more ways than one.
