CARY - The Cary Academy girls soccer team had not enjoyed a great deal of past success against crosstown foe Cary Christian.
After scoring three goals in a six-minute span late in the second half, the Chargers seemed determined to begin writing a new chapter to the annual nonconference matchup between the Cary independent schools.
Cary Academy prevailed 4-1, evening their overall record at 2-2-1 for the year.
Rebecca Kenney, Kelsey Miller, Emily Aarons and Sarah Roberts each scored for the Chargers, while junior Abby Eder notched three assists.
"This is a big win for us," said Cary Academy head coach Jeff Costa. "I'm not sure the last time we won against Cary Christian, but our girls were very happy today. After that second goal it just seemed to open up and you could see their confidence grow."
Miller scored the go-ahead goal with 11 minutes left in the contest off an Eder assist. Aaron scored five minutes later and then Roberts as the Knight defense seemed to break down.
"We had our chances early, but then seemed to back off, and when we got the ball it was two against four," said Cary Christian coach Brian Twidt. "They ended up with a lot of transition soccer and then took advantage of their opportunities."
Knight sophomore Brae Buster scored the lone Cary Christian goal about 12 minutes into the game to put the Knights (5-2-2) out in front 1-0.
Kenney slipped a shot past senior goalkeeper Katrina Wertz (11 saves) with 2:53 left before halftime to even the score 1-1.
The two teams played even for the majority of the second half, but Costa said he could feel that the Chargers were ready to break through.
"We were getting the shots but we just needed to put the ball on the frame," Costa said.
Junior goalie Sydney Branson played well in goal for the Chargers, making 12 saves and never allowing the Knights to slip a second goal past her that could have changed the momentum.
The Lady Knights entered the game ranked third in the state among 2-A independent schools. Cary Academy is not yet ranked in the 3-A poll.
