RALEIGH - It hadn’t been long since Holly Springs (4-5) attacker Emily Rowe had been on the other side of this. Looking across the field at a first-year Millbrook girls lacrosse team recovering from a 13-3 loss Tuesday afternoon, Rowe knew what it was like.

Just two years ago when Rowe was a sophomore and the Golden Hawks were in their first season, they’d had plenty of nights like this. The double-digit loss, the 16-shot differential, the winless start – it was all very familiar.

“It’s very discouraging,” Rowe said. “You always have to keep your head up and try really, really hard even though you’re down by 10, 15, 20 goals some games. You just have to play like you’re not down by that much.”

But those days are long gone for Rowe and Holly Springs – and it showed Tuesday.

After Millbrook took its first lead of the season on an Allison Boone goal a minute into the first half, Holly Springs overcame its early sloppy play to take control. The Golden Hawks got out in transition, scoring 10 unanswered goals and outshooting the Wildcats 8-2 in the second half.

“The tempo wasn’t being pushed early and I talked to them,” Holly Springs coach Whit Baker said. “It usually takes them about five minutes and the rest of the game they’re good. But that’s something we’re working on.”

Michelle Lishner led Holly Springs with five goals and Margaret Weiner added two. The Golden Hawks had six other players register a goal including Rachael Halley who scored her first of the season. Cassie Stewart scored Millbrook’s only other goal.
