CARY - Led by do-everything senior Joshua Landry, the Cary Academys boys lacrosse team scored early and often Tuesday night, rolling by Cary Christian 16-7 and improving to 5-3 on the season.
Landry, who leads the area in points and goals, filled up the stat sheet again against the Knights, scoring eight goals and assisting on five others to help Cary Academy win its fourth straight. His 13 points Tuesday improved his season total to 65.
Landry has scored 46 goals in just eight contests.
Josh is scoring multiple goals and handing out multiple assists every game for us, Cary Academy head coach Andy Gillis said. He works hard, hes got good vision and when hes not scoring hes looking for assists.
For Landry, who will likely break several school records in his final campaign with the Chargers, belief in his own ability is the key to his performance.
I go out there telling myself that Im going to be the best player there and that definitely helps, he said. Confidence plays a big part in my play and the team. We just like to come out strong and build momentum early in games.
Cary Academy jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead using precision passing and never looked back against the Knights, building a 7-2 lead after the first period and a 13-4 halftime edge.
The lead would grow to as much as 11 early in the third quarter before reserves saw much of the action in the fourth.
We did move the ball well early, Cary Academy head coach Andy Gilis said. We were able to push it and get some good looks. Were looking to push anytime we can to get fast-break opportunities. We were able to capitalize on those early on tonight.
Landry wasnt alone Tuesday, as several other chargers filled up the stat sheet in the lopsided victory. Connor Dunleavy scored three goals of his own and dished out an assist while five other Chargers scored one goal each.
Joseph Parrish, who scored his lone goal just before the end of the second quarter, also dished out two assists.
Gillis said he was pleased with his teams effort Tuesday but also said there is always room for improvement, especially early in the season.
We played good defense at times, but there are things we need to work on, Gillis said. We were able to limit their opportunities and keep them from getting good shots and our goalie played well. Its a process early in the season.
Josiah Keilson scored five of Cary Christians seven goals and also had an assist. Mike Daum added the other two goals for the Knights, who fell to 2-4 on the season with the loss.
We were just outgunned, Cary Christian coach Chris Daum said.
Were improving night and day from earlier in the season, but we knew Cary Academy would be a very disciplined, well-coached team. We kind of use that as a measure as we continue to try and close the gap.
