The 40th Apex High School reunion will be May 14 at Montague Lake, 10301 Penny Road, Raleigh. The classes of 1972 and 1973 are invited. The event starts at 3 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m. It includes dinner, music and mingling. Big John of 102.9's Beach Party show will be the DJ. The cost is $30 per person. Make checks payable to Sherry Dean and send to 106 Court Garden Way, Cary. (Please write your name and your spouse's name, if applicable, on the check so we can have name tags ready for pickup.) Register and pay by April 15.
Daniels Middle School students placed first in the regional Science Olympiad event in a competition with 29 other middle schools. They also won the best sportsmanship trophy, the first time a team has ever won both awards. The school won gold medals in five events, silver medals in four events, bronze medals in six events, fourth-place medals in two events, and fifth-place medals in two events. All 18 students received medals. The Daniels Science Olympiad Team has again qualified to compete in the state tournament that starts April 29.
Cary High School presents "Bye Bye Birdie" March 17-19 at 7 p.m. in the CHS Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students. Call the box office at 919-462-6816 to reserve tickets.
Second-grade teacher Sarah Katz received third place in the literature division of the Wake County PTA 2010-2011 Reflections Contest and third grade teacher Leo Doak took third place in the Visual Arts division. This year's theme "Together We Can" accepted entries in Music Composition, Visual Arts, Photography or Literature. For details, visit

The following students were recognized as Wake County Young Authors by the Wake/Raleigh Chapter of the International Reading Association: Peyton Goldthwaite, Kiera Tai and Caroline Brewer. Tai went on to receive statewide recognition. Also, John Ryan Cobb won first place in the kindergarten through second grade class of The News & Observer's Newspapers in Education Annual Essay Competition at the 2010 North Carolina State Fair.

Middle and high school students, ages 12 through 18, can apply for Nucor Corporation's "Strength of Steel Challenge." Entrants will work in teams of two to four to create a structure out of recycled steel that can be used to support another object or objects in the home, school or vehicle. The structures must be able to hold at least 5 pounds of weight. The challenge ends May 3, 2011. The winning team will receive the Nucor Future Engineers Champion Award and a $3,000 prize.
