The spring sports season is a beast to track all the way through.
On every day of the workweek, plus most Saturdays, there are games being played in some school sport.
There are nine different varsity school sports going on during the spring - six of them with team playoffs to play for. By comparison, winter and fall each have just six varsity sports with no more than three looking forward to team playoffs.
And did I mention most of these sports won't play with the slightest hint of rain?
Yes, it's tough to keep track of all the teams, coaches, athletes, cancellations and make-up dates across this wide spectrum. But I manage to know enough to put some preseason picks together.
Like we now do with every high school sports season, here's who I think will make the playoffs out of the Tri-Nine Conference and who will win the league titles.
Baseball: Holly Springs likely repeats the Tri-Nine, but don't be surprised if Lee County is the next closest challenger.
Green Hope and Apex should return to the playoffs. The last automatic spot should be a fight between Athens Drive, Fuquay-Varina and Middle Creek.
Softball: I like Holly Springs here as well - but Fuquay-Varina's bats may take out the Golden Hawks in their match-ups this year.
Apex and Athens Drive should each return to the playoffs, along with Middle Creek.
Girls soccer: I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Green Hope and Panther Creek will tie for for first.
Apex, Athens Drive and Cary should round out the five Tri-Nine playoff-bound teams.
Boys lacrosse: I've got Apex here, but don't be surprised if Middle Creek takes a big step forward and emerges as the next-best team.
Holly Springs and Green Hope should also make the state playoffs.
Girls lacrosse: Apex has a chip on its shoulder. Strange for a team that ended the regular season No. 1 in the state, but scary to everyone else.
Green Hope and Athens Drive should return to the playoffs, and Panther Creek might also follow.
Boys golf: Green Hope first, Holly Springs second. Just like last year.
Boys tennis: This is a truly wide-open race. And when the Tri-Nine has wide-open races, it's always wise to take Green Hope and Apex over the rest of the field.
Athens Drive is my darkhorse.
Boys track and field: Cary in a repeat.
Girls track and field: Apex in a repeat. Wait, is this cheating?
Now some of you may wonder, whatever happened to your winter sports predictions?
Glad you asked.
I called the basketball conference champs: Middle Creek's boys and Green Hope's girls.
However, it wasn't wise of me to predict such low finishes for a very good Cary girls or Green Hope boys team. They were the only two squads on which I was far from right.
In wrestling, I stuck with Cary but saved face by only taking them "by a hair" over Panther Creek.
For swimming, I did say Green Hope would win in boys, but mistakenly took Cary over Apex in girls.
