At the beginning of the week, five area N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association basketball teams began play in the state tournament. By Thursday's quarterfinals, only two teams remained.

By Friday, only Cary Christian's girls, which were playing for a repeat in the 2-A bracket under a new head coach, were still playing.

Carolina Day 75, Cary Christian boys 67: A year that set all kind of school records came to an end for the Cary Christian boys basketball team Tuesday.

The fourth-seeded Knights hosted the first round after winning their conference regular season and tournament titles, but fell to Asheville Carolina Day on Tuesday at home.

Coach Danny Thomas' team went 21-4 but will lose five seniors including Lindsey Johnson - the school's all-time leading scorer. Johnson averaged 21 points and eight rebounds per game.

Also graduating from this year's squad are all-conference players Calvin Winfrey and honorable mention selection Joel Self.

Junior Chris Thomas averaged 18.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.

Providence Day 60, Cary Academy girls 47: After winning their first-round home game over conference rival Ravenscroft 54-51, the Lady Chargers faced defending champion Charlotte Providence Day in the second round at Arden's Christ School. Providence Day was the No. 1 overall seed and had a first-round bye.

Cary Academy (19-10), seeded eighth, led for most of the first half, yet trailed by six. Despite 22 points from TISAC player of the year Mickayla Sanders, the Lady Chargers ended their season.

Sanders, a sophomore, passed the 1,000-point mark on the year in the Ravenscroft game. She averaged 21.9 points and 10 rebounds per contest.

Coach Danielle Haber's team had no seniors on this year's team, which finished runner-up in the TISAC regular season and conference tournament.

Forsyth Country Day School 84, Cary Academy boys 72: A 44-point effort from future N.C. State point guard Tyler Lewis brought an end to the careers of six Cary Academy (16-13) seniors Tuesday night. The Chargers earned a 10-seed in the NCISAA 3-A playoffs.

Two of those seniors, Cameron Walton and Jimmy Joyner, were recognized as all-conference players this year.

Joyner ends his career as the Chargers' all-time leading scorer with 1,464 points, while Walton ranks second with 1,447. They are the only two players in Chargers history to top the 1,000-point plateau.

Carolina Day 81, Grace Christian girls 31: The Lady Eagles ended their season 20-6 overall after a first-round exit in the 2-A playoffs.

After winning their conference regular-season and tournament, the Lady Eagles of Grace Christian were seeded 16th and were overmatched against top-seeded Asheville Carolina Day.
