Dolphin yields hope, concern
Davis Drive Elementary School certainly enjoys strong support from our community and we have an excellent PTA.Our students are well-behaved and their families instill in children that we are to be kind and respectful toward our community. As I work with children, I frequently think of Robert Fulghum's book, "All I Really Need To Know I Learned in Kindergarten."In this book, some of the simplest lessons are also the most valuable lessons - play fair, share, and hold hands when crossing streets. These lessons are still alive in our school system and our families. The exceptions are concerning, but I know from my experience in working with children that those who do not play fair and do not demonstrate respect for others are truly the exception.I only hope that the lessons of being respectful and playing fair will continue to reach our youth.Stealing a dolphin statue that is meaningful to a community is simply the wrong thing to do. [See "Davey the Dolphin is Home," Aug. 29].We are pleased that Davey the Dolphin has returned to Davis Drive Elementary and will continue to emphasize the lesson that when we all stick together, we are successful.Thank you to the pool cleaner who helped us recover the gift that students gave to our school. Thanks to the Cary Police Department for their work to recover Davey.Thank you to the news media for getting the word out.We need to look more at the gifts we are given and appreciate one another.Overall, I assure parents that there is more good in our youth. And while some youth may choose a wrong path, we work to set examples of doing the right thing.I encourage parents to ask questions of their children, know where their children are and know their friends. In our case of the stolen dolphin, there have been more words of hope and concern for our school and our property.I invite the person who took Davey to come forward and help to relocate Davey the dolphin to our school lobby.
Chip Mack is the principal of Davis Drive Elementary.
