FUQUAY-VARINA - Fuquay-Varina's proven ground attack continued to pump out the yards and points Friday night in a 42-7 victory over West Johnston. But it's the Bengals' defense that has coach Ryan Habich just as excited.

Fuquay-Varina's defense gave the Bengal offense excellent field position on its second and third touchdown drives.

"The first thing that we're going to take pride at Fuquay in is defense," Habich said. "That's how you consistently win high school football games and our kids and coordinators Dale Lowe and Jeb Hall do a great job."

Junior back Ricky Fergerson capped off both of short TD drives. First, after the Bengals' defense held the Wildcats on fourth down at their own 45 in the first quarter. Then after a low snap was covered by North Carolina recruit Shawn Underwood at the Wildcats' 16-yard-line.

Fergerson scored on the next play, giving the Bengals a 21-0 lead just 11 minutes into the game. Fergerson finished the night with four rushing touchdowns, 186 yards rushing and a 35-yard reception. He also scored on a 77-yard run in the second quarter after breaking two tackles near the line of scrimmage and a 7-yard run in the third quarter.

Hunter finished with 133 yards on 20 carries. He scored the Bengals' first TD on a 2-yard run. Rakem Reed accounted for Fuquay-Varina's final TD.

"I liked the way we executed in our last tune up before conference play starts," Habich said. "We're still improving."

The Bengals (3-0) led 42-0 before West Johnston got on the scoreboard on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Justin Carroll to Dantre Houston with 3:58 to play.

Fuquay-Varina junior defensive back Garret Suggs intercepted two Wildcat passes in the second half.

The Bengals win sets up a big game against Cary (3-0) next week.
