CARY - Town police are patrolling school zones as part of their annual effort to remind drivers to slow down while class is in session.
The "School's In, Speed's Out" campaign ends Sept. 10. Police will rotate the zones according to the beginning and end times of each school.
Drivers should expect to see an increased presence near all 30 schools.
"The new school year is a busy and exciting time for our families throughout Cary and we want everyone to arrive at school and get home safely," Cary Police Lt. Randall Rhyne said in a prepared statement.
During last year's campaign, 229 traffic stops yielded 165 citations - 130 of which were for speeding in school zones.
During the summer of 2008, the town installed 14-foot tall combined flashers and signs that display speed limits in school zones and amber warning flashers above the signs to help heighten awareness of the speed limits.
