CARY - It may be impossible to compete with the Steinbrenners, but members of the Cary Town Council are giving it a shot.
They're starting small - sponsoring a youth baseball team this fall.
Not surprisingly among this group, coming up with a name for the team of 10- and 11-year-old sluggers has required a little debate.
"Some might want to call us The Annexors," Councilwoman Jennifer Robinson wrote in an e-mail brainstorming session. "(Team slogan: We're Out to Get You)."
Councilman Don Frantz threw in for the Councilors - similar to the Washington Senators.
After Councilwoman Gale Adcock suggested the Council Debaters, Mayor Harold Weinbrecht replied in an e-mail: "No offense but that name might get someone beat up. ;-)."
Weinbrecht, who suggested the sponsorship, settled for the D-Bats - short for debaters, not dingbats.
He says it's similar to Tampa Bay's Major League Baseball team, whose initial name - the Devil Rays - was shortened by some fans to the D-Rays, and later officially shortened to the Rays.
Sponsoring the 13-member team costs $125, a fee the council members will split amongst themselves, out of pocket.
The team hits the diamond on Sept. 11 against New York Life, which is sponsored by the insurance company.
