CARY - A week ago, featured running backs Deandre Henry and Rashad Hedgepeth carried their respective teams to season-opening victories, but only Henry could break free the second week.
Henry, Carys 5-foot-9, 160-pound junior, broke off touchdown runs of 25 and 31 yards to lead the Imps to a 34-6 win over Northern Nash on Friday night at Cooper Field.
Henry finished with 17 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns before taking a seat in the fourth quarter as Cary head coach Ben Kolstad substituted liberally in the fourth quarter. Henrys performance followed up last weeks 175 yards and two touchdowns in a 53-26 win over Broughton.
Meanwhile, Carys defense, led by senior safety Donte Johnson, limited Nashs Rashad Hedgepeth to 13 carries for 21 yards until he broke off runs of 48 and 8 yards in the fourth quarter long after after the game was decided. His final total was 16 carries for 78 yards.
Our running game was a little slow in the beginning, Henry said of a scoreless first quarter. But our O-line got a feel for the game, and we made a substitution [with senior Sedrick Bailey]. Our running game took off from there.
Cary scored 20 unanswered points in the second quarter for a 20-0 halftime lead.
Henry had only threee yards on eight carries midway through the second quarter before he burst through a hole over right tackle for a 25-yard touchdown run. The first score of the half with 7:34 remaining was set up by the first of two fumble recoveries by Johnson, who also finished with six tackles and a sack.
Cary took a lead 13-0 on its next possession when Darrell Hamilton caught a swing pass from junior quarterback Connor Chase. The pass led Hamilton a little, but he made a one-handed grab and turned the corner for a 42-yard score.
Carys third touchdown was also set up by another Johnson fumble recovery, this time at Northern Nashs 11-yard line. Two plays later, junior Chuboy Umeadi went high in the right front corner of the end zone over the defender for an 8-yard touchdown catch.
Carys two second-half touchdowns came on Henrys 31-yard score with 11:02 left in the third quarter and Nate Hollis 22-yard run with 8:10 left in the fourth quarter.
