CARY - By the end of Panther Creek's season, the Catamounts might look back upon Friday's 19-13 upset of sixth-ranked Leesville Road as the night the fourth-year school established itself as a football program.
Was it our biggest win? Panther Creek coach Wayne Bragg said, repeating the question. They're all big. Our goal is to win every Friday night, and that's what we did this week. That's the reason it's our biggest win.
The Catamounts advanced to the playoffs last year for the first time when a loss to Fayetteville Jack Britt ended a 5-7 season, but Panther Creek is still seeking its first winning season. The Catamounts were 1-10 when the school opened without a senior class in 2007 and went 2-9 in 2008.
We knew we could win this game, said Panther Creek senior quarterback Kameron Bryant. We've been waiting for this game since we lost to Jack Britt, and we put everything we had into this season all summer.
Bryant directed a balanced pro-style offense that scored on its first two possessions to take a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder finished the night hitting 10-of-17 passes for 135 yards with one touchdown passing and one touchdown rushing. Senior running back Jonathan Douglass carried 23 times for 125 yards and caught two balls for 13 yards.
We want to be balanced, Bryant said. We weren't as balanced as we can be, but we won. They couldn't stop our offensive line. If our running game is working, I don't care about my stats. It's my fourth year, and I just want to win.
Panther Creek was able to run out the clock on its final possession behind a young but big and promising O-line that has only one senior, center Aaron Norris (5-11, 230). The tackles are junior Jeremy Plunkett (6-5, 235) and junior Jake Rorick (6-2, 280) and the guards are junior Nasrallah Ramsey (6-1, 205) and sophomore Mike Sutton (6-2, 280).
Bragg was quick to remind his players they're only 1-0 before traveling to Friday's second game at Durham Jordan.
We knew we had a pretty good team this year, Bragg said. I told our kids to enjoy this win until Sunday, and then start getting ready for Durham Jordan..
