SANFORD - Four playoff wins in four days allowed Fuquay-Varina to win its third Central Carolina Scholastic Summer Baseball League championships in five years.
Fuquay clinched its third crown since the summer league premiered in 2006 with a 7-1 win Saturday over Lumberton in the championship game.
The win completed a week where the Bengals beat Sanderson 10-0 on Wednesday in the first round, defeated Farmville Central 8-1 on Thursday and downed South Central 8-3 in Friday's semifinal before Saturday's championship victory.
Fuquay also closed out its regular season on June 19 with a win over Middle Creek, meaning the Bengals played five games in six days.
It all culminated with Fuquay adding another CCSSL title to go with its triumphs from 2006 and 2007.
"It's mainly our team being strong; we're really good chemistry-wise," Fuquay's Zach Orrison said regarding how the Bengals were able to accomplish their playoff run. "We've got a good pitching staff that got us through these days, and we're all hitting the ball right now."
On Saturday, Fuquay got the bats swinging early. The Bengals were already up 3-0 when their sixth batter came to the plate in the bottom of the first.
Travis Long notched an RBI single that was followed by Kyle Boraski's two RBI double to give the Bengals a three-run cushion early.
Saturday's start was the exact opposite of what happened Friday, when Fuquay found itself in a 3-0 hole after one inning against South Central Pitt, only to grab eight unanswered runs and hold South Central to only two hits and zero runs the rest of the way.
This time, it was the Bengals who got the early momentum. And they wouldn't let it go.
"It's always good to get ahead. It kind of puts the pressure on the other team. I was thinking back to [Friday] night when the other team got three in the first inning and then they didn't get any more. I said, 'I hope we don't have any of that,'" Fuquay coach Milton Senter said with a laugh.
"But we put enough runs up in the first three or four innings to make it difficult for them, and I've got a lot of confidence in our pitchers. They do a real good job," he added.
After missing the NCHSAA state playoffs for the first time in years last spring, a strong summer performance is just what the Bengals program needed.
"They performed well the whole summer. They were 19-2. ... It was a really good summer for us and a really good bounce-back," Senter said.
Fuquay added a run in each of the second and third innings, and then Garrett Suggs' RBI double and Addison Braswell's RBI single gave FVHS a commanding 7-1 lead. Suggs picked up the win for the Bengals.
"I'd say we were focused," Suggs said. "We came here three hours before the game to hit [batting practice]. We really wanted this one."
