SMITHFIELD - Woman arrested in hospital theftA Cary woman has been charged with stealing equipment from WakeMed and Johnston Medical Center. Jenine Marie Ellis donned scrubs before she entered the hospital in Smithfield on June 11, passing unnoticed by staff, police said.Police say she quickly found five wands used with ultrasound-imaging machines. The wands, called transducer probes, were worth about $10,000 each, Smithfield Police Detective C.M. Blinson said. "She knew what she was looking for," he said.Ellis also is charged with stealing transducers worth $26,000 each and an ultrasound machine worth $90,000 from WakeMed.Crash kills Cary motorcyclist, 63CARY Police said a 63-year-old motorcyclist died after he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a guardrail near Interstate 540 in Cary.The victim, David Leon Gerberding, of 3118 Appling Way in Durham, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Capt. Don Hamilton with the Cary police.The single-vehicle accident occurred about 11 p.m. June 20 on Aviation Parkway.Gerberding apparently lost control of the bike, and it ran off the left shoulder of the road and struck the guardrail.Hamilton said the preliminary police investigation has determined that neither speed nor alcohol played a role.Driver faces DWI charge, againCARY A local man faces impaired driving charges after leaving the scene of a wreck, police say.Miguel Romero Barajas, 40, of 318 Cheswick Place was charged with habitual impaired driving following his arrest on the afternoon of June 19 on Southeast Maynard Road.Barajas, who smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech, refused a breathalyzer test, according to a police report.He was charged with habitual impaired driving because he has had four DWI convictions in Wake County in the past decade.He was held on a $20,000 bond prior to an appearance in a Wake County court.Teen exposed self, police sayCARY A Cary woman told police that a teenager exposed himself to her as she drove behind the Mayfair Plaza shopping center on SW Maynard Road.It happened about 11:45 a.m. on June 27, police say.The victim told police that she was driving behind Kmart when the suspect jumped out from behind a dumpster, according to a police report.The suspect was described as being between 16 to 19 years old and with a muscular build.He was wearing only a T-shirt, the victim told police.
