How often is it that one athlete can win three individual state championships in the same year? And in two different sports, no less.
Cassie Crawford had that kind of senior year at Panther Creek, where she won the state pole vault indoor and outdoor titles as well as the best all-around gymnast in the small division at the gymnastics meet.
Crawford set a new state record in the outdoor track and field meet - clearing 12 feet, six inches - and did so in treacherous conditions amid a steady rain at the state championships. The previous record was 12 feet, one inch.
Crawford has dominated the last four pole vault championships, sweeping indoor and outdoor titles in her junior and senior year.
But her gymnastics title came as a surprise to even her. With the same limberness and mobility she uses to clear the bar, Crawford dazzled the judges as the state gymnastics meet. Her 37.85 won the small division's all-around competition.
Crawford will continue her pole vaulting career at Appalachian State next year on athletic scholarship.
