Sandals earn silver for ScoutJayme King of Cary has been awarded the Girl Scout Silver Award, which is the second highest achievement in Girl Scouting.
The award symbolizes outstanding accomplishments and a commitment to excellence, and helps girls build skills, explore careers, gain leadership skills, and make a commitment to self-improvement.
To earn it, King collected 110 pairs of flip-flops for children in Honduras to wear while carrying drinking water to their homes.
King is a member of Girl Scout Troop 1207 advised by Loretta Mask Campbell.
Nature program earns Scout goldCasey Marie Clements of Cary has been awarded the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting.
For her Gold Award project, Clements created and hosted a nature program at Umstead State Park for local youth organizations.
Her program educated youth on our nation's national and state parks and forests as well as deforestation and environmental respect.
Casey is the daughter of Michelle and Michael Clements of Cary.
She is a member of Girl Scout Troop 1860, and is advised by Wanda Schramm and Liz Pezzullo.
Boy Scouts hold food driveWhite Plains United Methodist Church Boy Scout Troop 210 held their annual Scouting For Food drive in February.
The troop collected just over 2800 pounds of food for the White Plains UMC Food Pantry, which serves more than 100 local people in need every week.
The troop is under the direction of Scoutmaster Ben Freeman.

Baptist Men get defibrillatorsThe N.C. Baptist Men Medical/Dental Bus Ministry now owns two automated external defibrillators (AED) thanks to an anonymous donor under the auspices of Cardiac Services, LLC.
Lori Tryon of Cardiac Services presented the units to Joanne Honeycutt, medical/dental bus ministry coordinator.
Tryon also trained several of the bus drivers to use the units. Cardiac Services, which is headquartered in New Jersey, is looking for nonprofit groups that would benefit from donated AEDs.
In 2009, the two medical/dental buses drove 29,977 miles to serve 4,886 patients at 152 locations.

Cary librarian to give lectureJinnie Y. Davis has been invited to deliver the annual Kaser Lecture at Indiana University's School of Library and Information Science on April 1.
Her topic will be "Academic Libraries in the For-Profit Sector."
Davis, a Cary resident, is Librarian Emerita at N.C. State University.
Apex student publishes storyA story by Aaron Schnoor, son of Joel Schnoor and Michelle Barry of Apex, has been accepted for publication in "Grannie Annie, Vol. 5," to be released in May.
Aaron's story, "Lillian's Cake," tells how his great-great-grandmother baked her first cake by herself on her tenth birthday - with hungry Indians in the yard outside.

Area men finish basic training Air Force Airman Martin L. Roberts graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
He is the son of Sibrina Roberts of Delta Downs Drive in Cary.
Air National Guard Airman Nathan M. Closen graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
He is the son of Michael Closen of S. Meadowview Lane, Washington, Ill., and Lisa McKenzie of Alden Village Court in Cary.
