GREENSBORO - Another 4-A state wrestling championship won by Winston-Salem Parkland meant another second-place finish for Cary on Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum.
The Imps totaled 82 points while Parkland had a whopping 183.5 to lead the 4-A field. Cary's five-year tournament championship streak was snapped.
Cary placed six of their 11 qualifying wrestlers but had no champions for the first time since 2003.
"It's really weird, I hadn't done that before," junior Ben Creed said of not being on a championship winner. "But our team has come a long way. Most of our kids were really inexperienced. We did good to make it this far honestly."
The Imps' only finalist was senior Matt Colvard, who was hoping to defend last year's 4-A championship at 160 pounds with a title in the 152-pound class.
In his final match for Cary, Colvard and Greenboro Dudley's Tylor Sigmon provided a classic.
The two wrestlers slammed the other around in a wild final period. Colvard began letting Sigmon escape to score more takedowns to grow his lead.
Up 10-9 with the clock winding down, Colvard tried to hold on for his championship's life. Instead, Sigmon scored a reverse with just 13 seconds left for the 11-10 defeat.
Also placing for Cary were Creed (125, third), Adam Leroux (103, fifth), Cordale Risk (135, fourth), Roger Terry (145, fifth) and Juan Macias (285, sixth). All but Creed, a junior who had won two state titles at 103, are seniors.
"It's easier to say who isn't graduating," Creed said.
Panther Creek finished fourth overall in the 4-A with 64 points. The Catamounts placed Ben Elliott (119, fifth), Joe Morison (130, third), Jamey Drennan (171, third) and Sheridan Rucker (189, fourth).
"This year's seniors mean the most to this program's success since they have been the core of our success in previous years," Panther Creek coach Jon Armfield said. "They have set such a high standard that will be a difficult reach for those that follow. They are all hard workers and fierce competitors, and I have been proud to coach them for the past few years."
Green Hope's Joey Baird placed fifth in the 140-pound class. Apex's Dan Mitchell finished sixth in the 130-pound class, right behind Sam Greenstein (130, fifth) of Athens Drive.
Cary brought over 11 wrestlers from regional competition, while Panther Creek had the next highest amount with eight. Athens had four wrestlers in the state tournament, while Green Hope and Apex each had three. Holly Springs had two while Fuquay-Varina had one.
