RALEIGH - Enloe's girls had to turn back a fourth quarter rally by Holly Springs to advance with a 58-47 win, while the Enloe boys had an easier time, pulling away from Athens Drive in the second half to take an 83-58 victory in the first round of the state 4-A basketball playoffs Monday night.

Enloe's girls, Cap Seven champions, will host a second round game Wednesday. The boys, who are the Cap Seven second seed, will travel to Tri-Nine champion Apex for its second round game Wednesday.

"We need to play four consistent quarters, keep the intensity up the whole game," said Enloe girls coach Pina Baker. "Teams are playing to keep their season going and when we get a lead we need to build on it."

Enloe led 17-10 after the first quarter and increased the lead to 33-20 at halftime. Holly Springs (8-17), which finished fifth in the Tri-Nine Conference, began cutting into the lead in the third quarter and pulled to within one, 44-43 on a short jumper by Teice Ford with 5:50 left in the game.

The Eagles, though, with sophomore Dana Brown and freshman Mykia Jones controlling the ball, outscored the Hawks 14-4 the rest of the way. Brown and Elena Frac combined to score Enloe's final 13 points. Brown scored 19 in the game, while Frac and Ryan Flowers added 14 each. Ford and Vianka Cotton scored 16 each for Holly Springs.

"I was definitely proud of our effort, we could have folded," Hawks coach Denitra Hayes said. "We needed more effort in the game like we had in the fourth quarter."

Cap-7 player of the year, Enloe point guard, Emanuel Chapman, made sure the Eagles season would keep going in the boys game, as he defended well, passed well, and shot the ball well. His 26 points topped all scorers. D.J. Rich scored 16 and Melvin Tabb added 13 for the winners, followed by Charles Ashley with 11.

"Athens played hard," Enloe coach Tommy Moore said. "In the second half we were able to pressure them better and contest their shot a little more. "Chapman played very well for us. He was patient on offense and able to penetrate and drive to the basket," Moore said. "Melvin had a good second half and Ashley and Rich had solid games. Jared Blakney did a good, tough job rebounding. He's a tough kid."

Senior Rahim Jenkins led Athens (12-13) with 21 and freshman Hurley Cannady scored 15.

"I think experience was the big difference. Enloe is talented, but they also have a lot of seniors out there and it shows," Athens coach Robert Clemons said. "We had a freshman and sophomore in the starting lineup and getting the experience in games like this is the first step.
