Apex, Green Hope take home Tri-Nine swim titles
CARY - For Cary’s Torrey Bussey it was business as usual Saturday at the Triangle Aquatic Center – another Tri-Nine conference swim meet and two more individual titles for her extensive resume. Over her four years, she accumulated six individual conference championships in all.In the two events she entered – the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard breaststroke – no one was able to finish within two seconds of her. And on top of that, she was part of two relay teams – the 200 freestyle and 200 medley – that brought home titles. The LSU-bound swimmer was reflective after her final conference meet.“It’s a little bittersweet for me,” Bussey said. “It’s a closing of one chapter in my life and the opening of another. And I’m really excited about the next chapter.”As far as her coach is concerned, no one has been done it better.“Of all the girls I’ve coached here at Cary, Torrey is at the top,” Imps coach Kyrin Hellinger said. “She’s extremely focused. And she’s a great teammate. She’s always trying to motivate the other girls.”As impressive as Bussey was in the pool for Cary, it just wasn’t enough to push the Imps past rival Apex for the team championship. The Cougars edged out Cary in the final relay to capture the title 400-387.“This is incredible,” Apex coach Tim Kane said. “Throughout the meet it was tight. We knew it would come down to the end, but our girls were unbelievable. A lot of them dropped their times down in this meet.”Panther Creek swam to a third place finish with 348.5 points, led by its star Henriette Stenkvist. The sophomore won both the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, and anchored the winning team in the 400 yard freestyle relay. On the men’s side, Green Hope defended its title. The Falcons’ piled up 582 points, which was 130 more than the second-place Imps.Green Hope junior Dominick Glavich led the way for the league champs with two individual championships. He won the 100 yard breaststroke by nearly two seconds and dominated the 100 butterfly by more than 4 ½ seconds, all while having dealt with a stomach virus the entire week leading up to the event.“When I woke up this morning, I couldn’t get out of the bed without feeling dizzy,” he said. “So considering the way I felt, I think I swam awesome.”Cary’s Deniz Gurel also won multiple events, capturing the 100 and 200 yard freestyle titles.Apex finished third with 404.5 points, led by Mitch Deforest, who won championships in the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard backstroke. In the diving portion of the event, which was held on Friday, Holly Springs’ Julie Doran brought home the girls 1 meter title with 380.35 points. Middle Creek’s Madeline Martin took second with 302.35.Green Hope swept the top two spots in the boys 1 meter competition. Jackson Boyer won the championship with 215.5 points and Bradley Burk placed second with 196.2.Cary nearly swept the conference awards as Bussey and Gurel won Tri-Nine MVP awards and coaches Hellinger and Erin Stevens won Girls Coach of the Year. Green Hope coach Richard Wesendunk won Boys Coach of the Year.
