Barring any unforeseen snags, Holly Springs is poised to announce tonight that former Fuquay-Varina football coach David Riggs - who retired from coaching just two years ago - will take over next season. Riggs has also coached at Athens Drive and Cary.

It'll give a new twist to one of Wake County's newest and best rivalries.

Holly Springs has only been around four years, but its students and fan base have quickly developed a hatred for the Bengals.

Fuquay has had no trouble finding reasons to detest the Golden Hawks after losses in softball, baseball and football - three of its traditionally-best sports - in the past calendar year.

Now, the Hawks could hire the man who some Fuquay supporters once told me they wanted to name Bengal Stadium after. Most former Riggs assistants still work the sideline at Fuquay, including Riggs' successor Ryan Habich.

Jim Hynus had led the Hawks in all four years of the school's existence before resigning in December, citing personal reasons.

Holly Springs went 7-5 in its third year of varsity football and lost in the first round of the state playoffs after tying for second place in the Tri-Nine Conference.

Riggs won 22 games in his last two years as Fuquay coach.

Middle Creek boys basketball coach David Kushner won a pair of games last week to run his career win total past 100.

His Mustangs needed a come-from-behind 66-64 victory over Holly Springs on Jan. 11 for No. 100, and then followed it up with a 69-61 win over Green Hope for his 101st.

Kushner has won all his games as coach of the Mustangs, where he took over in the 2004-05 season.

Former Wake Forest and Cary High standout Zack Schilawski was selected 9th overall in Thursday's MLS SuperDraft by the New England Revolution.

Schilawski recently completed his star-studded career with the Demon Deacons in the NCAA College Cup final four for the third year in a row. Wake Forest won the NCAA title in 2007.

At Wake, Schilawski scored 40 goals and 100 points in his career which placed him among the school's top scorers. He was named to several All-American teams this season and was a member of three regular season ACC champions.

He was a high school All-American in 2005 for then-coach Mike Dunphy and led his team in scoring all four years. Schilawski was also a standout in the classroom, graduating second in his class of 504.

He continued that academic prowess in college, where he recently won the NCSAA scholar athlete of the year.

Triangle-area girls dominated the Tar Heel High School Indoor Classic on Jan. 9 in Chapel Hill. And one Cary High runner was a part of that.

Deanna Foshee won the 1,000 meter event with a time of 3:04.43. The state meet is schedule for Feb. 13.
