CARY — Tri-Nine Conference champions in both boys and girls cross country were crowned on Wednesday at WakeMed Soccer Park’s cross country course with little surprises.

Green Hope’s Bryan Spreitzer and Apex’s Kersie Jhabvala each won titles in unrelenting, wire-to-wire fashion. Green Hope also swept the team championships – making it the eighth straight year the boys had won the conference. The girls have now won in seven of the last eight years.

In winning this year’s meet with a time of 15:27, Spreitzer defeated last year’s second place finisher in Middle Creek’s Trey Geiger (fourth, 16:30).

“I knew if I did my best, I really thought that I could win,” Spreitzer said. “It’s like eight seconds faster than I’ve ever run at this course. It’s a pretty tough course, lots of hills. I’m pleased with my performance.”

Spreitzer was injured in last year’s race, and had sympathy for Cary's Mohamed Abushouk, who had been feeling ill and did not race. Abushouk won the conference meet a year ago.

“He was sick. I wished I could’ve raced him,” Spreitzer said. “But I’m happy I won.”

Green Hope placed two more runners, Ryan Walling (third, 16:24) and Joe Hagan (fifth, 16:31), in the top five to end up with 31 team points.

Apex was the only other team with fewer than 100 points, finishing with 54.

Jhabvala, a senior, improved upon her fourth-place finish in 2008 to winning with a 18:28 -- shaving 1:26 off her time a year ago.

“From this year compared to last year, more than anything, [the difference] is my coach Roy Cooper,” Jhabvala said. “He gave me training specifics for this summer and this year I’ve been training with the guys, and I owe it all to him.”

Jhabvala said it was unusual to find herself in a front-running position.

“Last year I relied on other people to push me,” Jhabvala said. “It’s definitely more exciting at the end when all goes well.”

Joining Jhabvala in the top five were Green Hope’s Maura McDonnell (second, 18:32), Olivia Enright (third, 18:35) and Jessica Rossabi (fifth, 19:15). Cary’s Deanna Foshee (fourth, 18:37) rounds out the top five.

The Falcons had 27 team points, defeating Cary (47) and Athens Drive (68) among others.

All teams and players participating in the Mideast Regional next week will return to WakeMed’s course on Oct. 31.
