Imps win Adams Classic

The Cary High wrestling team won the Mark Adams Holiday Wrestling Classic Dec. 21-22.

The Imps accumulated 299.5 points and won their third invitational tournament this season. Hickory St. Stephens was second with 260 points, and Sanderson finished third with 181.

Cary had champions in seven weight classess to go along with two runners-up, three third-place and one sixth-place finishes.

Lawrence White (130 pounds), Matt Colvard (135), Justin Koren (140), Brendon Parker-Risk (145), Gabe Brotzman (152) Josh Bobb (160) and Eloheim Palma (285) all won their weight classes.

With his 6-2 decision over St. Stephens Sam Nomish in the 140-pound final, Koren earned his 200th career win.

Palma, who won the heavyweight championship with a pin in 19 seconds,was named the tournaments most outstanding wrestler.

Cordale Risk (second, 119), Ronnie Winterton (second, 125), Ben Creed (third, 103), Harrison Rosenbaum (third, 112), Brett Colyer (third, 171), and Alec Snow (sixth, 189) also placed for Cary.

With 110 points, Apex finished seventh in the 22-team field.

Ruben Jeffers was fourth at 285, Tyler Forsythe was fifth at 103, Nester Avila was fifth at 130, Brian Davis was fifth at 135 and Justin Suter was fifth at 171.

Apexs Connors wins at Pinehurst

John Connors, a junior at Apex High, won the junior-senior division at the Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst on Dec. 22-23.

After an 8-over-par 79 at Pinehurst No. 6 in the first round, and trailing by three strokes heading into the final round, Connors shot a 1-over 72 for a two-day total of 151 and a two-shot win over Jeff Headman (Conneaut, Ohio).

The Winternatioal tournament series consists of seven 36-hole stroke play events from November through February at Pinehurst Country Club.
