Before the season began, Athens Drive High players spoke of winning eight games — this year. And this was coming from a program that has not won a combined eight games in four years.

Friday, though, the Jaguars posted a 30-20 victory at Havelock High to improve to 2-0. In the opening week, Athens rolled to a 61-33 win at Southern Lee High.

Against Havelock, the Jaguars jumped to a 24-0 halftime lead and then held on for the win.

Junior quarterback Nick DeMuro again led the Jaguars, completing 11-of-32 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown. Phillip Barren began the Jaguars’ scoring with a 6-yard run in the first quarter.

David Enichen’s 15-yard field goal and DeMuro’s 1-yard keeper run for a touchdown stretched the lead to 17-0. Barren and DeMuro then hooked up on a 53-yard scoring pass late in the quarter for what ultimately proved the winning touchdown.

In the third quarter, T.J. Kornegay ripped open an 80-yard scoring run to help the Jaguars build a 30-0 before Havelock scored 20 unanswered points.

Kornegay led the Jaguars with 56 rushing yards, while Andy Bertolozzi added 30 yards on five carries. Brad Moore had six receptions for 85 receiving yards.
