KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Two relative unknowns will meet in the finals of the 92nd Carolinas Amateur Championship at Kiawah Island Resort's Turtle Point Course.

Local favorite Whitfield Massey of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and Scott McClellan of Cary will face off in the scheduled 36-hole match today.

The 23 year-old Massey, a recent graduate of the College of Charleston edged Dale Fuller of Raleigh 2 up before routing Baxter Culler of Hartsville, S.C., 6 and 4. Massey, who works at nearby Osprey Point course, credited his good play to his recent opportunities to work on his game.

"I have been able to play and practice more than ever," said the 23-year-old history major. "I also have been playing Turtle Point course quite a bit."

McClellan, a 46-year-old national sales rep for Premier Marketing Services, ousted Barden Berry of Kinston before taking Steve Harwell of Mooresville 20 holes.

McClellan, whose best CGA finish was a third place in the 2001 North Carolina Amateur, felt he was fortunate to edge Harwell.

"I know Steve is a great player so I wanted to end it on 17 with a birdie, but I could not get it done," McClellan said. "We both struggled in the end, so I felt fortunate to take the win. Maybe this event will get me over the hump.

Reigning champion Paul Simson of Raleigh was defeated in the quarterfinals 2-and-1 by Harwell, while Eric Shriver, a former Green Hope High standout who won the medalist qualifier, was also defeated in the quarters -- 1-up by Massey.

Also, Brad Dilen of Cary reached the second on Friday before being ousted. Dilen, who played at Apex High, defeated Tim Tang of North Charleston, S.C., in 20 holes in the opening round and then was eliminated 3-and-1 by before Fuller in the second round.
