Area soccer fans now have their chance to put a handle on the new local team.
Triangle Professional Soccer, which will field a United Soccer Leagues First Division team at Cary's SAS Soccer Park starting next spring, announced today that it is accepting fan submissions for the team name.
The winning name, along with the team logo and colors, will be unveiled July 19 during halftime of the USL's All-Star game against Sheffield Wednesday at SAS Soccer Park.
Chris Economides, the managing partner for TPS, said the team has already received about 1,000 suggestions.
"We have to get these choices nailed down," Economides said. "It's very exciting to finally be at this point.
Instead of Triangle Professional Soccer it'll be the Carolina whatever."
Submissions for the naming contest will be accepted via the Team Name Suggestion Form on the team Web site,
www.carolinaprosoccer.com, now through June 9.
Fans who have already submitted suggestions for the team name do not need to enter those names again. Suggestions already received will remain under consideration.
Team staff will trim the contenders to about 15 or 20 before sharing those with a panel of local media that will help choose the winner, Economides said.
The fan who submits the winning entry will receive two lifetime season tickets and will be invited to the USL All-Star game as a guest of Triangle Professional Soccer. The game will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel at 8 p.m.
